The time has finally come, our September Trailer is now live!
Grab your mask and fins, because this month we're diving into the depths of Mundus.
After exploring the elite warriors of Mundus' fishfolk, the Jurakin Mirmidons, this month I wanted to invade your tabletops with hordes of their smaller, wilder kin: the Low Tide Jurakin, also known as the Lunatics.
For the base prototype, as you can see in this ZBrush recording where I sculpted the entire T-pose from scratch, I took inspiration from real piranhas. Their anatomy and aggressive features worked incredibly well as inspiration for the Low-Tide Jurakin.
Posing them and sculpting all their bizarre weapons was a lot of fun, and I really can't wait to see these little lunatics painted on your tables!
Armored Moray Riders
The perfect mounts for our fishfolk had to be lethal, slippery and fast, but with a strong fantasy element to make them unique. The Armored Morays have massive heads inspired by the skulls of Dunkleosteus. I really like the contrast between their solid, fully armored heads and their agile, scaleless bodies. And honestly, Jurakin just look great riding them!
As always, the Morays come both with and without saddles, fully compatible with every other Artisan Guild rider.
Octavius, Tidecaller of the Ebb
I had a lot of fun with this month's Heroes. From the very beginning, I wanted to sculpt a shaman where you couldn't quite tell whether he was in control, or whether the huge octopus wrapped around his head was actually the one pulling the strings.
I think I've sculpted enough tentacles for a while! Twirling and wrapping every single one was incredibly tedious, but I'm very happy with the result.
Archibald, Baron of the Mudflats
And what can I say about Archibald?
This greedy, second rate Baron rules the underbelly of Jurakin society with an iron fist. Archibald surrounds himself with little fishfolk who shower him with praise and make him feel terribly important. Meanwhile, his hordes of Lunatics extort local fishermen, threatening to wreck their boats and destroy their livelihoods if they refuse to pay tribute. A true gentleman!
Stormtide Leviathan
This month's Epic Boss actually came from an idea by my son:
"Dad, make a giant whale that flies out of the sea and brings a storm with it!"
I immediately loved the idea, and I'm really happy I decided to develop his concept into the Stormtide Leviathan. At the very last moment, we added the broken anchor lodged in its body to give the model a little more movement and storytelling.
Botticella, the Jurakin Venus
Clearly inspired by Sandro Botticelli's The Birth of Venus, Botticella ended up being one of the most time consuming pinups I've ever sculpted.
Recreating the composition meant sculpting two additional little Jurakin to take the place of the figures surrounding Venus in the original painting. Whether the fish headed Botticella or her beautiful Nereid appearance is the true one, I'll leave that for you to decide.
